Okay. I feel like I have a lot of things I want to talk about, but let's look for a minute at what exactly we are trying to do here. Kate, you can correct me if I am wrong, but you and I have both been plodding along hoping to find ourselves in different creative places than where we are. It is not that we are not both actively making and pursuing things, but we are both feeling this lack of creative community. Whenever we talk, or get a brief visit I am always more energized and full of more creative questions, more ideas, and more projects that I hope to work on. I also usually just feel better from all the laughter, even when we are having a serious talk. We live so far apart, which is the case with most of the people I find most energizing and inspiring. When I get a little taste of the community I am longing for I want more.
Because of this need for community and a love of making, we are (slowly) going to start hosting retreats. I think we both need a weekend where all we are concerned with is making things and being around other people who want to make things. We will cook all the meals for this event-- a delicious vegetarian menu, there will be two mornings of yoga, and we will work together with guests on at least eight projects (with the possibility for more). All supplies will be provided, and Kate and I will help everyone plan and execute projects that are not carbon copies of each other, but themed and open for personal interpretation. At this first retreat we are working on holiday gifts and decorations because while we both find it very satisfying to give handmade gifts, we don't always have the dedicated time to make gifts for lots of people.
If you are reading this, we want you to come! If you are super skilled and just want to make things in a group environment, come! If you are new to making, want to practice some skills, come! If you want to make new friends and feel the community bond that comes from working together, come! Bring a friend! We honestly hope to have a range of ages, skills, and personalities. Checkout the event page and see if you can make it. We hope to host you soon.
